National Wheat
Research Priorities
The 2023–2028 National Wheat Research Priorities provides a sharp vision and clear targets to guide research in the Canadian wheat industry. Focusing on six themes, the National Wheat Research Priorities serves as a tool to communicate and link market signals with industry opportunities and research goals and objectives, while still recognizing the importance of regional differences.
The six themes for 2023–2028 are:

Improving Wheat Yield
- Yield potential maximized
- The efficiency of R&D and wheat breeding processes are maximized

Crop Environment Interactions
- Yield stability under a variable climate
- Management of insect pests
- Management of wheat diseases
- Management of weeds

Cropping System Sustainability
- Sustainable wheat rotations
- Maximize efficiency of input use
- Improved decision-making tools
for the farm that benefit wheat
crop sustainability

Continuous Improvement in Food Safety
- Continue to manage risk related to the prevalence of mycotoxins, heavy metals, and pesticide residues to meet compliance with global standards
- Continue to foster a robust food safety system to identify and manage new food safety issues

Customer Quality
- Market opportunities for Canadian wheat are increased
- Wheat quality and consistency are maintained and meet customer needs

Wheat Nutrition
- Wheat and wheat products are recognized as nutritious components
of healthy diets - Wheat production and processing provides enhanced nutrition and
value-added products
Approximately $90 million in wheat research has been funded since the launch of the National Wheat Research Priorities in 2018.
